I've been debating with myself about what to do about [info]likethegun_lims. I enjoy running a lims and I indicated that I would be running another round there, but I haven't actually been watching Supernatural (though I've kept up with what's going on, so I would use caps up to the season finale). So should I do another round? I kind of said I would ...

Likewise, because I haven't been watching Supernatural, I haven't made any SPN icons. So I'm wondering if I should do a request post or just not worry about it (that is, I know people watch my journal for spn icons). I may or may not get back into Supernatural next season ... we'll see. I just haven't been able to stand the storyline and quit watching in January.

I've also been getting back into my first fandom - Star Wars. So I've been thinking about doing a Star Wars lims, one that's all inclusive - images from the PT, OT, EU and whatever else I can find, so each challenge there's something for everyone. There's one or two lims running and several icon challenges, but none that are about the entire universe of Star Wars. It's a little daunting to me since I've been out of SW for so long, but I'm leaning more and more towards doing it, and just see what happens (and if anyone actually participates ...).

And last but not least, I'm promoting [info]xf_lims. Go join! It's going to be run in the style of [info]likethegun_lims and [info]lantis_lims, with multiple caps each challenge and caps provided ahead. It's going to be awesome!

Well, that's it. I've taken my last final. College is over. All that remains is a graduation thing (an honors thing) and getting my grades.

It feels very strange. O.o

I have this friend who sends me those chain emails where you're supposed to send them to whatever number of people and something will happen (a wish come true, bad luck if you don't do it, etc). I refuse to send them to others on general principle, though I don't mind getting them. What do you think?

So yesterday afternoon there was this report that went out that there was this guy walking from Mesa Court (dorm housing) in camouflage carrying a rifle. I was in the Classics department building at the time and they actually locked all the doors and had us get out of the front seating area, which is visible to the outside, and also suggested we not leave the building. I'm oblivious to dorm housing as I never go there so I didn't know at the time that Mesa Court is, like, RIGHT NEXT to the Classics building, which sure explains why people were so freaked. My TA was apparently also there in the seminar room for a class and she said today in section that she was traumatized and very freaked out by it, which is funny because I was, er, very underwhelmed. I figured if he was going to start shooting he would have already, and seriously, what moron would walk around in camouflage carrying a rifle and expect not to get noticed?? So I placidly took my test (on the Aenied from spring 2008, finally done with that class!) and left afterwards. There were a fair number of people still walking around, so I didn't worry about it.

But it turns out that they did seriously lock down a lot of buildings and classrooms, more than I'd realized (some classes were in fact cancelled), and there were all kinds of text alerts (which I am not signed up for) and emails going about, although by the time I left the Classics building I think everything had been reopened. I also heard on the way home (and today in section from my TA) about the poor guy who happened to be in the cafeteria wearing camouflage pants. He got physically tackled by the police after a lot of "GET THE F*** DOWN!" and such like, even though he was just sitting there eating lunch. Some people on the bus when I was on my way home that day were apparently there or were friends with the guy (and a guy in section has a roommate who is friends with the guy, apparently), because they were talking to each other about it and being like, "Dude, where'd our civil rights go?" (I paraphrase.) And after all that I don't think they actually ever found the moron.

There's also now officially two reported cases of swine flu on campus.

Fun stuff.

Went to the beach this morning (early morning - left around 5:30?). It's been overcast during the first half of the day for the past week, and it was today too, but it was still really pretty with the gray sky and green sea, and there was hardly anyone there, so all I heard was the ocean. Managed to spend an hour and a half doing nothing, just walking along the beach and going on the swings, which I love because they're right there on the beach facing the ocean. It was a really nice and soothing way to spend the morning. I should do it more often.

Called a school back about a job and made a total fool of myself on their voicemail by stuttering over 'position' (as in Latin position) really badly. SIGH.

I went to the beach and swam in the ocean with A SEAL TEN FEET AWAY. How cool is that? It was pretty near the beach just swimming along, totally ignored me, but still! Way cool!

I made it to the finals of [info]sg1_lims, and the voting is up. They've had a lower amount of votes since it's gotten nearer the end (which doesn't surprise me because that happened to likethegun_lims every round) so if you've got time, go and VOTE! The entries are all really fantastic. :D

Had creme brulee at Greek class today. That's the sort of thing I'm really going to miss when I graduate - how friendly it is in the Classics department. :(

So you all know I run [info]likethegun_lims - well, round three is ending, I put up for the voting for the final challenge a few hours ago, and I want lots of votes! The last participants did an awesome job. :D

So if you have a moment, VOTE. :)

Subjects of discussion included:

The foreign cult of Magna Mater, in which during a religious frenzy men would castrate themselves (not popular with the army); a five minute discussion of whether to include 'monte' (hill) in a translation regarding the Palatine (which is a hill); stinky cheese in French restaurants; when a colleague's most vivid recollection of you before working with you is when she stayed at your home, and on the way there, you called to tell your husband to put clothes on*; a portrait was taken down from the seminar room/classics library because certain people thought it was too creepy (see here for why); eating scorpions in Beijing; the most expensive coffee is taken from poop; and on February 15, women in Rome were whipped with bloody goat skins by naked men for fertility (this came up in two totally separate classes!).

* this really came up on Friday, but is indicative of the random discussions in Greek class.

I forgot to take my medication last night and I feel sick and nauseous and I woke up this morning (before the alarm) when I realized I was shaking enough to vibrate the bed. My thoughts are racing and disorganized and I really hate that I have to go to school today to take a quiz and get the translation for an exam on Monday. Fucking sucks.

According to my Latin teacher:
tmesis - when a word is interrupted in the middle with another word. His favorite example: Abso-f***ing-lutely.

*amused*

He also said tmesis is from a Greek word which means to cut, and he didn't say it specifically, or I didn't hear it if he did, but I think it's from temno, because in my Greek class we've been reading about the man/woman being cut in half to get the separate sexes (originally the hermaphrodite was a ball - literally, a ball, like something you'd play with - I think its meant to be a humorous mental image, and if not, well, it is anyway) and we've had the verb and a noun that's etymologically related to said verb.
