I finished my novel!
It's a 127,000 word science fiction epic. I'm in the process of editing (and recently sent it to the first non-friend/family member for beta services) and hopefully attempting to publish it will be next. :D

It is so awesome! I am quite excited, but also beginning to get stressed with the thought of querying and all. o.O

Congrats! That's always exciting! And 127K? Wow. You go girl.

Thanks! It's actually 27,000 words longer than planned and longer than is advised. *cough* Apparently really long first novels are not liked, unless it's 'epic fantasy or science fiction'. I guess mine applies???

I know a bit more about the YA market, as I've been researching that for my own novel, but I've read the 100K is the max that some agents would accept, although yeah, that 100K is usually reserved for sci fi and fantasy. But I think that if you have an awesome query and awesomer first pages, that would work in your favor. There have been debuts that have gone over that amount in recent years, I think.

I mean, c'mon, it's an ObaBook! Everyone's gonna wanna read it. :D

Yeah, there's always exceptions. Sometimes big exceptions. Have you ever read The Name of the Wind? Far as I know that was the author's debut novel, and it was way over 100k. (Of course he's professor and all this writing cred to back him up ...)

I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried. But I guess worst case scenario, I self-publish and see what happens.

Incidentally, I've started work on my next novel and it is YA (fantasy this time). What's yours about? Are you close to being done?

Mine is a time travel YA story. I have finished the novel (did so about a year ago). I've gone through it to find stuff like inconsistencies and plot holes but haven't had anyone else look at it yet in full. I've posted a pitch and the first 250 words on a YA site, and from the comments just on that I learned it needs a lot of work. I'd sorta hoped to begin querying this fall but I don't think that will happen. Or maybe the last 82,250 words aren't as bad as the first 250 ... lol.

I posted my query and everyone hated it, so I understand where you're coming from. But I also think I posted it in the wrong place - not because the comments were negative, but because a lot of what they said didn't help (one person just posted 'what' every single time she didn't understand something). I went and looked at successful queries and got about a hundred times better. :p

If you ever want another pair of eyes, I'd be happy to look at your work. :)

I might take you up on that at some point, once I work it over more.

And when can we read yours? I'd still buy a copy when it gets published! ;)

Well, once I've worked on it more ... ;) No, seriously - I want to at least do my planned rewrite of the first five thousand words or so. If you want to read it then, you can. :)

I'm not going to post it here or any details about it - I want to keep my hopefully-professional life separate from my fandom one. (I really don't need reviewers digging up something I wrote when I was sixteen!)
